Doing Nothing

13/8/2019

I often like to write about stuff I have been doing.  I am a bit stumped this time though unless I title it “Doing Nothing.”
I know I have made it an art form.  If someone can bottle air on top a pristine mountain and sell the product, then maybe I could make doing nothing seem like I was doing something in a very systematic, calculated way.
The thing about doing nothing though is the word passes by.  I am not a participant but an onlooker.  That is not counting electricity use though.  I have used some of that in doing nothing.  I know their will be a price to pay.  I used some water to make the coffee, so I am sure to be billed for that.  I am paying rates to just be here.  Who cares if I do heaps or nothing.  Rates don’t care.
Doing nothing in this case does not mean I do not have options.  There are heaps of things I could be doing.  The garden needs weeding.  I’m a long way into doing our taxes.  The fridge could do with a clean.  It is a beautiful day and I could go for a walk.  But that is not going to happen.  Never would so I should cross that one off the list.  I have made a choice though.  It is to do nothing.  It seems even the line of least resistance takes work.  But I am not a quitter.  I will make this work.
From where I am sitting, I can see our small shed door is open and needs closing.  The trouble is it is there, and I am here.  If it would come to me and I could close it without needing to get up I would do it.  Instead that needs to go on my “to do” list.
The good thing about simple tasks on a to do list is both simple and time-consuming tasks take one line each.  Being able to cross off having done a simple task, looks like I have done heaps.   There, I have justified not doing anything now.  Do it tomorrow and it will look like I am on a roll.
The trouble for me is, this doing nothing thing seems to be getting easier.  They reckon practice makes perfect.  I have been doing my share of practicing.  Still, I do not imagine that “doing nothing” along with “stare meaningfully into the middle distance” is seen as a desirable skill set.  If it is, then I am your man.
I will console myself in the fact that this is just one day.  I can probably justify it in heaps of ways.  After all “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”  It’s funny, but play looks different to what I imagined.  Besides, my name is not Jack.
Anyway I need to go and work on this doing nothing thing.  I know the next time I will be able to do it is down the track.  I need to make hay while the sun shines and evening is approaching.
