Doing Love

Love is a doing word.  To me there is a vast difference between saying something and doing something.  Though both are needed for sure.  Ok for many guys it is hard to say as it goes against our image.  We are supposed to be tough.  But I have wondered why on the screen, guys take incredible punishment in a fight, but they always wince when a woman applies something to a wound.
If I need a drink of water someone saying “I love you” does less for me than someone actually giving me a drink of water.  Saying something is one thing, doing something is another.
Yet I have found that even doing something is not a sign of love.  Giving a person a drink of water can be out of a sense of obligation.  Like, I would rather be doing something else, and the giving of water I see as an intrusion.  Giving someone a drink of water can also be motivated by a desire for a return.  Perhaps I know the one who needs the water.  Perhaps I know when their needs are met, I will get a great reward from them.  Or my giving may be motivated by a desire to influence.  Most seem to align themselves with those who give them what they want.
Love to me is motivated by none of these.  It does not expect to gain from whatever it does.  It is both motivated by compassion and selflessness.  That is sure easier to say than do.  There are times when I just do not want to go there.  Times when I know I should do something but “you can’t make me” takes over.  Yet I invariably feel bad if I follow that path.
I can express love with words, but love with actions has more credibility.  I really like something  Ezra Taft Benson said “ Surely when you love your wife with all your heart, you cannot demean her, criticize her, find fault with her, or abuse her by words, sullen behaviour, or actions.” Love to me changes actions.
I reckon Florence Nightingale was on the mark when she said, “I think one's feelings waste themselves in words; they ought all to be distilled into actions which bring results.”
Words alone are good, but if I am not given a drink of water and die of thirst, they yield nothing and change nothing.  I may feel good when you say, “I will send you a million dollars.”  But only you sending it, and me getting it, will change things.  My oldest brother said he sent me a new you beaut car for my birthday in January.  I am yet to receive it.  He blames the post.  Personally, I have my doubts.
I am for talking love, but I reckon it is only part of the deal.  It needs doing love to be complete.  As is always the case, I need help with that one.
