Doh

It is never pleasant, and it is not something I enjoy, but I tend to learn heaps from it.
That came from something I read. “"It's possible that one of the reasons you got on the path of mastery was to look good. But to learn something new of any significance, you have to be willing to look foolish...”
There are times I learn stuff and it is a good feeling all around.  There are other times I learn stuff and it is through a “doh” moment.  I learn stuff then too.
The difference to me seems to be that I feel learning via error more deeply and it tends to stick with me.  It is embarrassing and humiliating, but I do know while I never seek it, it does me good.
Probably a humility thing.  Like the saying says I want people to think highly of me.  I prefer to look like I have it all together.  I may, but it is the result of giving it a go and sometimes it does not work out like I imagine.  For sure I learn the lesson I want to learn but I felt foolish making a mistake that was obvious for others to see.
Yet as someone once said, “we would worry less about what people thought of us if we realized how rarely they actually think of us.”
When I make errors, it tends to be around a few.  When those in the spotlight make an error it can be front page news.  Ok my error may be front page news as far as I am concerned, but in reality very few are aware of it.  That sort of thing may be cold comfort and does not change that fact that an obvious error occurred, but it does mean for me the implications are limited.
But be it widely known or of limited impact it affects me the same.  I sit here and several times that has happened come immediately to mind.  I know there is other stuff I have learned and imbibed that have had a positive impact.  I can recall the light bulb moments that changed me for the better.  But can also recall the other light bulb moments in which lightbulbs broke.  That to me was a lightbulb moment and the broken lightbulbs were not a waste in the light of what was eventually illuminated.
Hopefully thought that sort of thing encourages others to give it a go.  One thing I know is that getting something right, often involves getting it wrong in the process.  It is funny how that sort of thing sticks with me and becomes a cornerstone of what I am setting out to achieve.
Whatever way I learn I want to learn.  Sometimes it is a breeze and sometimes it is a hurricane.  But structures are stronger when built to resist hurricanes.
