Discontent

There was something I really liked, that had been written originally in another language.  I thought today I should find out what it was really saying. I must admit, I like it even more now.
So often our translation of something is the “best fit” at the time.  I am not game to try it again, because I don’t know that I could do it.  I looked up the word “wicked” the other day and fair-dinkum it was translated, “good.”  When I was growing up, it meant exactly the opposite.  These days though, something that is “totally wicked” is seen as good.
I was wanting to know what distress, in debt or discontented meant in the context of what I read.  I so related to the distress part when I found out that in the original it meant “a narrow place or disability.”  As soon as I saw “disability” I thought that is me!  That was a few of my mates to.
When I first moved to Brisbane my best mate had polio.  The place I rented was on a steep block.  He would drive his car up the slope, and get out on a flat bit next to the house.  I kept fish.  I knew no-one else who did.  Until I met him.  He was so into fish keeping.  He would not do it though, when a fish of mine had jumped out of the tank and was all dry and wrinkly, give it mouth to mouth at my suggestion, to try and revive it.
It was he and I that went and got a heap of worms and established a worm farm.  It looked great.  But all the worms escaped.  Personally, though I have no proof, I reckon they burrowed their way out.
The “in debt” part means “dun for debt.”  I know of a collection agency “Dun and Bradstreet.”  Makes sense now.  I had to look dun up.  I looked at the Collins dictionary.  It lead me to another place that had a word I really thought I was going to need to look up to.  Fortunately, there was enough there to help me realize that dun for debt is taking about someone who is hired as a debt collector.  I looked up in the Miriam-Webster dictionary its first use.  It said “origin unknown.”  Fat lot of good that was.  Miriam-Webster have a “Word of the Day.”  I reckon my word of the day would be the same every day, “sleep.”  I had seen a friend chased for a debt.  It wasn’t because they had rung up a debt – their former husband had.  He could not pay, so they went after her.  It led to knocks on the door at all hours.  As they say “nothing to look at here.”  Eventually they just went away.
What we translate “discontent” was “bitter.”  Again I looked up the dictionary to see what they said “bitter” meant.  Their definition was “feeling or showing anger, hurt, or resentment because of bad experiences or a sense of unjust treatment.” I also saw “implied” somewhere.
It is probably why we say they feel “the whole world is against them.”  It makes me think that rightly or wrongly, I can have a sense of unjust treatment.  I remember hearing somewhere that the brain cannot distinguish between what is real, and what is vividly imagined.  It doesn’t matter if my experience is real or vividly imagined, it is real to me.
Why was I going there?  I guess because I could.  Having time available leads me to all sorts of strange places.
