Differences
I was considering today how easy it is to imagine my view is the correct view.  Certainly, as a song I love states, “some of them we must defend with everything we’ve got, some of them don’t matter much at all.”
What highlighted this line of thought for me was a song artist.  He was so different from what I expected.  He was long haired and covered in tattoo’s.  Yet what he sang about was the direct opposite of rebellion and angst.
It made me think how there are those who would write him off because he did not fit their acceptable mould.  It seems that way of thinking is rife.
I see it in politics.  Here some vote Liberal and some Labour and others others.  People everywhere have their own point of view.  Yet to me, while some things are important many really do not matter.  I would definitely prefer to befriend someone who’s views may be diametrically opposed to mine, then cut them off because they did not see the world as I see it.
Different points of view are a fact of life.  I reckon the world would end up a pretty lonely place if I only got close to those who see the world as I see it.  And the thing for me is, eventually I would be the only inhabitant, as everyone sees thing slightly differently.  There may be agreement on the whole, but there are always different shades and different emphasise.
To me, that is what compromise is all about.  I cannot compromise what matters, but I can compromise what does not.  What matters to me was said by someone who has never been proven wrong in what they stated.  I reckon I need to be careful though, that I do not mistake something that does not matter, for something that does.  It seems many a friendship has been lost when someone mistakenly stands for what does not matter, as though it did.
I will hear out, and treat with due respect, the thoughts of anyone, and put in my two bob’s worth if I am invited, but it may be about a subject I feel does not matter in the long run.  Putting down a green carpet may look better, but will putting down a blue carpet cost lives?  Perhaps someone has a completely different word view to me, but they know heaps about stamps.
Some are adversely influenced by those espousing things that don’t really matter. By force of personality.  Or vulnerability.  Or a desire only to accept something.
I no doubt hold to things that don’t matter, but I do know I do not want that to be the case.  I will always seek out similarities.  Agreement concerning differences may or may not happen.
But, is the way someone else sees the world my responsibility to correct?  I know of only one responsibility I have.  To love.  Including tough love.  But I can always recognise what is disingenuous.  And would I like to be treated the way I am treating someone?
Motives stand out.  The acceptance of a person and differences can come from feigned love, or unfeigned love.  People know.
