Desire

The measure of desire is not in when I feel like it, but when I don’t feel like it.
The reason for the above is I was considering the stages I go through when I have a long term desire for something that is good and right for me.
Generally it starts with an excitement about something.  It is a time of organizing and making it happen.  I am all enthusiastic.
But no matter how much I desire something, and how right I know it is for me, emotions are sure to come and go.  There can be different reasons for it to happen, but it will happen. And to be honest although I would prefer to maintain high octane keenness, there is inevitably flat patches, and I tend to learn heaps from them.  No one likes to lose but I do remember a football coach saying the team learned more from the loss then they would have from the win.
Flatness can be come to for a number of reasons.  I find I am most vulnerable when things are settled and going well.  It is then I am most likely to be careless and make wrong decisions.
The thing about enthusiasm is it is an emotion.  Sometimes I am happy.  Sometimes I am sad.  Sometimes I am all “go get em.”  Sometimes I am “why bother?”  All these feelings are just that – feelings.  Feelings come and feelings go.  They are a part of the cycle of life.
Yet one thing should remain constant for me and that is the desire.  It may seem really cliché, but I like the saying, “never doubt in the dark what was true in the light.”
There can be many reasons for feeling flat besides just it being the way it is and the need to ride it out.  Sometimes sickness is a precursor to feeling flat.  The body is engaged in necessary warfare.  Sometimes weariness can get the better of me.  Sometimes opposition can knock the fight out of me.  Sometimes something out of the blue can knock me for a six.
Whatever the case a right desire sees off all the difficulties.  I can be holding on by a thread, but a thread is enough to turn things around.  For sure if I am uncommitted to something then something will cause me to drop my bundle.
Yet when the desire is right, commitment and perseverance equals success.
