Desert Diamonds

It is interesting how some things resonate with me.  I read something by a person called Alice Wellington Rollins which said, “The test of a student is not how much he knows, but how much he wants to know.”
I like that.  I do not profess to know a lot.  But I know I do want to know lot.
I have been a student in learning institutions and interest did govern memory in those cases.  I know I wanted the piece of paper at the end of it, but how much did I really want it.  Was I ready to get into it even if I was not that interested?  I find that hard.  More than once, I have finished something simply because I started it – not necessarily because I found it particularly interesting.  But I do know that in every case I was glad I did finish it.
I find such a thing advantageous.  Sometimes, doing what I think to do, is not absorbing or even that interesting.  But it is necessary.  I grow as a result of sticking to something even when I don’t feel like it.  I am not talking about the times I really should walk away, as I have gone down a wrong path, but the times I have gone down the right path that has led to a desert walk.  I mean who am I to determine where value is to be found.  Diamonds can be found in deserts.
I took on a roll I really had no desire for.  If it was in a list of activities numbered one to ten, I would have listed it number ten (ten being the least desirable).  Yet I felt to take it on.  I was willing to learn.
I am so glad I did.  I have been at it for a while now and although it is not the way I would have chosen to go, I feel it has the best way to get where I want to go.
It seems to me learning is a life-long pursuit.  Degrees become out of date.  What was enough for yesterday may not be enough for today.  I am thankful for what I know, but I want to know heaps more.
