Dentist

I had to go to the dentist today.  They tried to make the appointment when I was on holidays.  I said no hoping the tooth would be ok for a couple of weeks.  Turned out it was  but I knew I still needed work when eating weekbix proved to be a painful exercise.
I must confess I do not like going to the dentist.  I like the outcome for sure but the process is never one I look forward to.  This was no different really.  Fortunately the dentist seemed as competent as any I have come across.  The area was numbed and work began.
I just feel so vulnerable lying back in a chair with my mouth open and needles going in.  This dentistry had a tv to look at.  It did not help that a huge spider was on screen.  I think they have an animal planet station.
It took me a while to realize the music I could hear was unrelated to what was on the screen.  I was trying to figure out what the Boss singing had to do with the spider.  Turned out the answer was nothing.
I am glad the mouth is numbed when the tooth is being worked on.  Though the anaesthetic does give a false sense of security.  Everything seems like a piece of cake until the anaesthetic wears off and the pain begins.  At that point I start to hope that the problem really has been fixed and it will all settle.  I really do not want to add “ring dentist” to my to do list.
I was told not to eat anything hard until the next day on the side of the mouth that had been worked on.  I honestly thought and have found that is not a problem.  My right side is my dominant side anyway.  I have been channelling coffee and noodles to the right.
Merril rang to make sure I was ok (she is out and about).  She commented that I was still conscious.  I commented that she was too but I think she was referring to my trip to the dentist.
So for the next few hours I need to grin and bare it.  I am hoping all this will be a thing of the past.  I really do not think I do pain well.  But the way women tell it I am not alone.  For men getting the flu is akin to “I’m gonna die!”  Women just seem to grin and think, “if you want to know what real pain is try having a kid.”  No thanks.  Not my job.
I tend to write this stuff in the sitting area outside the house.  I think I might go into the air conditioning and read a while.  Or perhaps I will have a snooze.  Life is full of hard choices.  Visiting the dentist was not one of them.
