Delight

I came across a word yesterday and it tweaked my interest.  It is a word I seldom hear in conversation these days but looking it up I reckon we cay it in other ways.  The word was “delight.”
I never hear anyone say, “I had a delightful time thank you.” Or “that piece of cake was delightful.”    Yet people say they had a good or great time, and cake tastes great.  When I look up the meaning of delightful though there is a good chance that is what they meant (especially when the great time was totally unexpected, or someone was really hungry). “High degree of pleasure, satisfaction.  One dictionary said, “extreme pleasure or satisfaction.”
It seems to me “extreme” fits the bill.  I know I get satisfaction doing a job well.  Most times though it is not an extreme satisfaction.  Satisfaction yes.  Extreme satisfaction I do not think so.
Yet if I learn a piece of music I l really like, or even hear something I really like, I can definitely be more inclined to say my satisfaction is extreme.
To me extreme satisfaction is more likely to elicit an emotional response.  It may be laughter or tears of joy, but it is something out of the ordinary for me.
They say, “big men don’t cry.”    Either I do not fit the template or that is not right.  From what I have experienced and seen I am inclined to think it is not right.  So much it seems, seems relative.  Maybe making a barrier to me is not a big thing.  Yet for someone else it can be huge.  It can have looked like a bridge to far.  Especially for someone recently disabled.  For me it may be satisfying.  For someone else it can be extremely satisfying.
The more I think about it, the more “overwhelming” seems appropriate (I must admit I wonder about overwhelming.  Why is it someone is always overwhelmed.  They are never whelmed?).
For me extreme satisfaction is often out of the blue.  The process or the conclusion can cause it.  Whatever way it happens it takes me by surprise.  In this day and age, I am not likely to say something was delightful, but I am likely to say something was totally awesome beyond belief.
How ever it comes about I love it.
