Delegating

11/4/2020

Thankfully, I have never had a problem delegating.  It seems there are a number of people just waiting to be asked.
I think they call it “sharing the load.”  I cannot do all myself.  Well I probably can for a while but my sanity would suffer (some would argue it already has).  To me, to try and do everything myself, is potentially denying someone an opportunity.  It may be their strength.  They may be able to do the task better than I ever could.  Denying them means I will never know.
What someone volunteers for, to me needs to be spelt out.  Certainly people are volunteers, but they need to know what they are volunteering for.  Some folk seem to just think “I would like to be so and so.”  They volunteer for the job and only then find out what it entails.  That can led to second thoughts or not doing what really is needed.
To me it is important that the person who gives the job keeps an eye on it.  Not in a “micro managing” kind of way, as that often leads to resentment.  However it does seem important that someone is seen to care.  That to me leads to the best outcome for all.
I personally am so thankful for volunteers, but it is wrong to me, to volunteer for something with the aim of doing nothing.  To me it is a form of robbery.  In some cases, there are others who want the job and would love to do it.  They may not potentially do it as well as the incumbent can, but I have always been big on that it matters less how we get there, as long as we get there.  My way, more often than not, is not the only way.  Some folk it seems, just want the title and not the task.
A balance needs to be maintained.  My experience has been I am always happiest when I have enough to do.  Not having enough was always soul destroying.  Potentially under employment was as dangerous as over employment.  For me, not having enough to do, led to potential slackness.  It was not that I was not asking for more work, I was just not being given it.
In one place I did not have enough.  (Thankfully NASA had a live feed.  I saw the rover land on mars.  There was one point when the craft was descending that there was no contact for about 20 seconds.  I, along with everyone at NASA, was chuffed when contact was restored and the craft did what it was supposed to do.)  For me, that was an exception.  When I did not have enough, the days seemed to drag.
For the job giver it is hard.  Finding a balance for someone is an art in itself.  Giving too little or too much can both potentially lead to someone walking away.  No one wants that.  Ideally a task is given and done, and the next challenge is moved on to.
