Degrees

I must admit us and them does not do it for me. There seems to be those full of their perceived self-importance. Those that act like their knowledge somehow makes them superior.
I am all for learning and degrees and having something to share with another that may help make their load easier. But it seems to me to be possible to get colder by degrees. We were talking yesterday about having the right tools. How much easier things are with the right tools.
It was brought home to me a while back. I knew I could detach an item given a few hours. I also knew people were coming that possibly had the right tools. They did and the task took seconds and would have taken me hours.
That is why I really try to avoid reinventing the wheel. I figure if someone has been there before, why not piggy-back on what has been learned already rather than going through it all again.
As I say I am all for self-improvement but to me attitude is more important than position. Letters after someone’s name can be an acronym only, or a lived experience. I will always honour a position even when I might feel that the person occupying the position may not be due the honour that goes with it.
I do not have any degrees, but I do have a diploma and cert 4. To me they are worthless unless applicable and I reckon they both are. It was weird but for one subject in doing the diploma I had to know stuff from a book. I had not studied the book. But I was reading a book called “How to develop a superpower memory” at the time. So I applied those principles to the test. I memorized every chapter title as what was covered was in the titles. I was told I topped the class in that exam. I’ll take it.
I really wanted to give up on one course I was doing. Not because it was not doing me good, but I was being slack. I did not want to put in the hours that were needed. I talked to the one running the course about it. Like a good leader he discouraged me from giving up. I did it. Yes there were hours I had to put in but I did it.
No wonder so many jobs are based on experience. The advice of someone at the coal face who has been there done that is invaluable. In one job I was at a person went to Canberra. He rose thorough the ranks really quickly, but he had trouble getting a job outside of Canberra. It was known that promotion was a matter of need rather than experience. The level had little value in the outside world.
Degrees really do matter to me. I think they are great to have and much of value is gleaned in learning. But degree or no degree to me attitude trumps.
I am just me. I will use what I can where I can. The way I operate can almost seem lazy, but my thinking is, if I do it right and do it the easiest way possible, I can do more.
