Decisions

What I have written about recently has led me to ask myself a question.  What is the difference between a good decision and a bad decision?  Sometimes that is obvious, but often it is not.  The decision may be the best of a bad lot.  Or a good decision but there was a better one out there.
I don’t know how long I have been this way, but I am big on outcomes.  Though knowing something at the end can be like being wise after the event.  But I reckon if I have done my homework, then I have considered possible outcomes and made decisions from there.
As has been said, “Think 100 times before you take a decision.  But once that decision is made, stand by it…”  I agree with that, but I do not agree with standing by something that is found to be wrong.  It is not a case of standing by something no matter what.  To me it does matter.  I find it better to cut my losses than to persist into the abyss.  It can be embarrassing.  I may not be the only loser.  But I reckon it is best to limit the fall out.  The best I can do is chalk it up to experience.
For me there is no place for procrastination.  If it is a good decision, I need to go for it.  If it is a bad one, I need to go for rectifying it.  There is an impulse that when something is seen to be wrong, we freeze up, or assume the fetal position under the bed.
I am a great believer in now.  If something is seen to be wrong, then now is the time to act.  No one is guaranteed a tomorrow but if there is one, one thing is guaranteed, and that is the situation will be worse if I do not act now.
Often, I do not know how the flow will go when I start writing.  When I look at what I have been thinking, it is all to do with bad decisions.  But fortunately, I have made good decisions too in my time.  A number of them thankfully.  To me though it still begs the question as to what makes a good decision.
Again I really believe it has to do with outcomes.  And it has to do with making the right decision for me.  There is so much I could do.  There is so much too that needs doing.  Yet I do not believe that just because something needs doing “I’m da man.”  That to me is a quick-fire way to burn out.
I want to do what is right for me to do.  I generally find that in doing that, others are better off to.  My every action has implications.  My desire is the implications are good for myself and others.  I can only really hope for the best.  As C.S.Lewis said, “We are not living in a world where all roads are radii of a circle and where all, if followed long enough, will therefore draw gradually nearer and finally meet at the centre: rather in a world where every road, after a few miles, forks into two, and each of those into two again, and at each fork, you must make a decision.
