Day One

10/4/2024

One day or Day One.  I heard someone say that recently and the statement to me was impactful.
The point was being made that so often we (and I have seen it for me) hold back on pursuing dreams and aspirations for a number of reasons.  For me recently, the shed it seemed overwhelming.  There was so much to do to see it tidied up.  Merril and I looked at it and knew it was to be done but it had very much become a one-day thing.
It was only earlier this week I turned the one-day thing into a day one thing.  There is still much to do and that it why it was day one of several to come, but as is so often the case the hardest part was starting.  Once started it was a plodding thing but plodding saw changes.  At the end of the day there were major changes.
For me “overwhelmed” is not a reason not to act.  Sometimes huge tasks need to be broken down into smaller parts.  Smaller can seem doable.  And lots of small make a large.
Other reasons why some see something as a one day thing is the fear of failure.  To me it is pointless to state I would like something without doing it or making it happen.  That is  sometimes a “going out on a limb” thing.  I can even be made to look silly to start with.  The question I ask myself though is, “is it better to try and fail then to never try at all?”  My answer is if it is something I hold to then the cost is worth the price I may pay and success follows failure.
I always comfort myself in the knowledge that hard times never last.  I admit I look forward to getting over a hump every time.  I am not a sadist who enjoys difficulties, but I do know that difficulties always make me stronger.  Through practice todays difficulties become tomorrows “been there done that” and the stepping stone to greater challenges.
Another thing that could have held me back was being misunderstood.  It is amazing what is remembered.  I remember as a kid finding mail on the street and delivering it to the people it was intended for.  They started a rumour that I was stealing mail.  I have no idea why that was said but it failed to make being kind to people a maybe one day thing.
The more I think of it the more I realize there are many other reasons that being overwhelmed, the fear of failure or being misunderstood that can keep me from turning one day into day one.  Yet as far as I am concerned any worthwhile dream is worth a day one.
