Darkness

I am so musical I carry around a set of drums in my ears.  I was listening to a song for the first time recently that set off a whole thought process.  It said, “There's a light you don't notice, Until you're standing in the dark.”
I guess that struck a chord with me because I get up early enough for it to be dark.  In the middle of summer, it is not, but it is now.  In fact, the sun is getting up later and later.   Once it was light when I arose.  Now I need to wait longer and longer for it to be that way.  I am well acquainted with the dark.
I know the line of the song is true.  There are billions of stars in the sky which are there during the day, but I do not see them.  Well I think that they are there.  I cannot prove it, but reliable sources inform me they are.
At night-time I see them though.  Some of them anyway.  It is darker the further from the light I can get.  Out west is supposed to be good.  I see pictures where the sky is full of stars.  It is not that way here though - but there is plenty.
I am interested in the night sky.  I have a mate who advises when the space lab will be visible to the naked eye.  I also have a record of when major celestial events are to occur.  For example, on the 27th of this month the comet Swan will be visible, and currently the annual Eta Aquariid meteor shower is at its peak.  Seeing a comet during the day is next to impossible unless it is really big or bright.  The darker it is, the brighter the light shines.
I know that if I hear a rustle in the grass and it is dark, I often retreat.  When I could not see it, I imagined it could have been all sorts of things.  I do not imagine it is alien life from the Planet Eron though.  If it were, it would be newsworthy.  If I had a photo or video it may even briefly make the tv news.  If I have a torch and shine it on the thing that caused the rustle, it may only be have been a mouse.  Good chance it was a very big mouse if it was to have been an alien life form.  Yet seeing it I would know that in this case it is nothing to escape from.
I did have the hairs on the back of my neck rise one time I was sitting in the dark out in our enclosure.  I heard a noise coming from our car port.  There was a cat on the roof silhouetted against the night sky looking at me.  Once I knew what it was, I could take the appropriate action.  When I did not know, I was literally in the dark.  It could have been some ravenous beast out to get me for all I knew.  But no, it was a cat.
It really helps me to know what I am dealing with.  I don’t do vague well.  For me contrast is good.  It seems to be why so many insects are camouflaged.  Someone recently posted a picture of a snake in the leaf litter.  It was virtually impossible to see.
What I don’t see can get me.  It is commonly said, “well I didn’t see that one coming.”  I handle seeing something clearly much better than being oblivious to it.
