Crows

So much love.  The birds flying away when I approach is a sign of affection isn’t it?
The birds in our yard actually seem to like us.  We are good to them.  Well mostly we are good to them.  Actually, Merril is always good to them.  I am too but sometimes I do have a unique way of showing it.  I still reckon freezing the egg for the crow was worth it.  At least one of us was amused (and it was not the crow) when the crow leaned towards the egg when I surrounded it with ice.
I do not know I am comfortable with confessing I was out-smarted by the crow one time.  I semi buried an egg and had the end bit exposed.  Eggs are impossible to break when pressed at the ends.  The crow is in the habit of using its beak to break the egg.  My plan was he would just not be able to break the egg to get into it.  He couldn’t.  So he picked up the egg and took it elsewhere.  He got into it in his usual way.  I really got no enjoyment out of that.
We have two crows that have decided our yard is their yard.  Well - three.  Now is probably as good a time as any.  Merril and I have an announcement.  We have a baby!  The crows had it, and they bring it to this yard.  Sorta not the same I guess.  Still we are glad they feel confident enough to bring it to this place.  I am glad after a fashion.  It is very noisy.
There are several ways we can tell which is the baby.  Basically its incessant demanding of food gives it away.  Also the way the Indian Minors regard it gives it away too.  Normally Indian Minors flee from the crows.  Not with this one though.  When they were all in our yard, I saw them checking him out.  Today they took a couple of steps towards him and he fled.  If in a very unbalanced manner he ran away, then fled is the right way to put it.
There is one place in our yard one of the adult crows is skittish.  It is near our shed.  I think it must have had a bad experience with the door suddenly opening unexpectedly when he was outside.  We put food for the crow near the shed door.  This crow grabs a piece and runs away and devours the food in what it considers a safer place.
The crows like us feeding them and we like that they deal with bugs.  There are a couple of raised garden beds near the enclose where we sit.  One of the crows often comes to the garden bed and forages in there looking for bugs.
When I move suddenly he flies away.  There is that display of affection again.
