Coronet

Merril chose the word from the dictionary this time and it was “coronet” meaning “small crown.”  Not as in someone who has a small head who wears one but one designed that way.  It went on to say “esp. as worn or used as heraldic device…”  I chose not to go with the last part which said, “ring of bone at base of deer’s antler.”  The only deer I have seen in the wild was in the US and wildlife is not to be approached there because of rabies.
The Heraldic device was something I could go with though.  I could not believe what I saw.  There is a whole world I was unaware of.
As many know I am very much into flags and colours and banners.  At a place I used to live Merril made for me two flags which I attached to the top of a gate of a granny flat.  When I go to footy games and the like, I really like to have a flag to wave.
Merril’s maiden name is O’Connor.  They were into clan colours.  A few of us years ago we went to a world cup match in rugby union.  Although O’Connor is Irish, we went dress up as Scottish.  The match was between Scotland and the US.  I wore a kilt.  A Scottish person saw me and came and spoke to our group.  Fair dinkum I did not understand a word they said as they had such a broad accent.  I do believe though they were speaking English.
I like to write songs.  Probably the one I was most into was one about a King in a procession.  I imagined trumpets and banners.  “Lord of the Ring” probably contains scenes that come closest to what I pictured.
I do reckon it is great to herald something I have an allegiance to.  But this is about crowns.  I must confess I have not had anything to do with crowns.  I’ve seen people wearing them and it seems they are often full of diamonds and the like.  Such a thing would probably be lost on me.  Good chance I would sell it off and get the money.  Not to say there is not a crown coming my way, but to me that is a side benefit and not what I am seeking.  I am seeking the one who bestows the crown.
But what I often do with words like this is look up about it and follow where it takes me.  In this instance it was the heralding.  Apparently, some armies had on their shield the insignia of who they represented.  I have only seen it in movies but often when armies in Japan fight, they have the colours of their side.  Often there are small flags of blue or yellow or the like to show who is on my side and who is an enemy.
I guess my penchant for such things explains in part my love of stamp collecting.  So often what I see is a representation of the country represented.
Maybe I did not write a lot about crowns, but the word took me down a road less travelled.  Turns out it led to a nice place to visit.
