Convenient

Where has the time gone?  There would be 15 year old’s who were not around for Al Gores “A Inconvenient Truth.”  I thought of that because I was considering the word convenient.  It is incredible to me where the mind goes.    I was reminded of the words of a Bob Dylan song (Brownsville Girl) where he sings, “people seldom do what they believe in, they just do what’s most convenient and then they repent.”  The dictionary defines the word convenient as “involving little trouble or effort.”
I must confess that inconvenience and convenience come to mind when I see the school kids protest about global warming.  My thoughts have nothing to do with the rightness or wrongness of the cause, but is an observation.
Having a day off school is convenient.  Protesting for the cause is convenient.  Doing something about it is inconvenient.  I am amazed at the amount of rubbish that is left behind.  To care for the planet sometimes involves inconvenience.  To say that others need to do it is convenient.  My behaviour is unaffected.  (I no doubt do similar things in other areas, but my blinkers help me not to see them).
The point for me is there is often a disconnect between what I believe and what I do.  I may feel strongly about something and be willing to tell others in no uncertain terms why I think what I think is the way to go.  Yet often if I am asked to do something about it, it is seen as too inconvenient.
I may claim to be a seeker of the truth, but does my behaviour change when I am confronted by what I consider inconvenient?  When I am honest with myself, I will go where something leads even when it is not convenient.  If I am not honest, I will take the line of least resistance.
I knew a guy who has since passed on who was taken prisoner of war.  He was interviewed and said he could never forgive his captors.  He later told me he regretted saying that.  Up until the interview he was all love and mung beans.  That was convenient.  There came a time (the interview) when what he believed was inconvenient.
How strongly I adhere to something is only proved by holding to it when it is inconvenient.  But I know I cannot set myself up in this matter.  Often in times of testing I fail.  But when I do, I always need to resit the test.  When I really hold to something even if inconvenient, I eventually pass and can move on.
For me, convenience is convenient.  It is only when what may be convenient now becomes inconvenient that it is proved I really hold to something.
