Confabulation

31/5/2021

I heard a word today that I was totally unaware of.  It is a term used in psychology.  “Confabulation.”  Wikipedia describes it as “a memory error defined as the production of fabricated, distorted, or misinterpreted memories about oneself or the world.”  It goes on to say, “Confabulation is distinguished from lying as there is no intent to deceive and the person is unaware the information is false.”  Healthline says, “Confabulation isn’t a disorder itself. It’s a symptom of an underlying disorder… A variety of conditions can result in confabulation. These include memory disorders, injuries, and mental health disorders…”
The reason I am fascinated by it is I have seen it at work.  It left me at a total loss.  I knew things were not as described but the person saying it totally believed it.  Only since hearing of this have I associated it with a major head injury that occurred.
It seems to me medical science or psychology is very good at defining something but not so good at solving something.  The answer often seems to be drugs that manage rather than solve an issue.  People become zombies.  The problem remains but the person is no longer an issue.
What has become very real to me as a result is the realization that I may be dealing with something on one level yet there is another level being operated from that I am totally unaware of.  I do think all issues can be dealt with but it helps to know what one is dealing with.
I can only go by my experience, but it seems to me the memories are a reflection of the person.  If they are positive the memories may be nice but untrue.  If they are negative the response to the memories may be “that is untrue and why go there?”
The personality reveals itself.  It is like they say that sometimes happens when a person comes out of anesthetic.  What is closest to the heart is revealed.  The person has nothing that enables them to hide.
The condition is not something to be desired or not something to wish on anyone but to me what is in front of me needs dealing with whatever its source.
I feel that whatever the case my first response always needs to be love.  I only need to consider how I respond.  When something is confrontational or argumentative I can respond in a couple of negative ways first.  I can respond in like manner or I can go within my shell.  Neither of those responses is positive but it is difficult to replace the initial response.  The response that I think is right but needs to be worked at it to consider the matter and having an answer or not the person must know they are loved.
I know I am more willing to accept a bitter truth when I know the motive of the other is the best for me and does not come from a soapbox.
Fortunately confabulation is rare, but it does exist.  On my journey I may not know all there is to know, but whatever the case, others will know they are loved.
