I am constantly amazed at some of the things I hold to that I do not know where I was or when it happened. I hold to something I call replacement theory. I guess it is more than a theory as I have proved it again and again and it’s importance to me does not stop growing.
This morning I saw it another way. I can have one dollar. In our current currency a dollar can be made up of 20 x 5 cent pieces, 10 x 10 cent pieces, 5 x 20 cent pieces, 2 x 50 cent pieces or 1 x $1 coin.
Add to that any one of the coins could be really daggy. It is not a question of value. A daggy 5 cent piece is worth the same as a clean 5 cent piece. But a daggy one is less desirable than a clean one.
So what is for me the normal process? We have done it before with notes. Sometimes they are really crumpled and do not go though the bank machines. If we can, we replace a crumpled one for an uncrumpled one. The value does not change but the desirability does. I guess it is why cloths are washed.
For me it is a case of that with so much I hold to. I will always get rid of daggy and replace it with clean. It is just the way I am. Not only that, but to take the coin thing further I prefer a $1 coin to 20 x 5 cent pieces. It is easier to store and allows more room for other desirable coins.
I need to be careful at that point in particular though. If I lose a 5 cent piece, I still have 95 cents but if I lose the $1 coin I have nothing left. It is a case of what I value, I look after and guard.
Merril and I often joke about such things when we leave the garage door open over night. There is stuff there we would not miss and say it would be good if it were taken. We do not feel that way about the car though. We value and want to guard that.
My most common analogy for this sort of thing is a glass of water. If it is daggy and I undrinkable, I will replace the daggy water with clean drinking water. So often I hear of third world situations where the reason for disease is dirty water. The goal of many organizations is to replace the source of the dirty water with a pump to provide clean water. Clean water is not disease bearing.
Whatever the case it is my desire to replace daggy with clean. Who I am has value but replacing daggy with clean is desirable. Banks tend to look at coins and replace daggy with clean. Daggy can be cleaned but not if it is too far gone. If I were $1 my value remains the same no matter if I am clean or dirty, 20 x 5 cent pieces or a $1 coin. Yet clean coins have a different future than unfixable dirty ones.
