Church

Merril and I went to church yesterday.  Big deal, some may say.  Well it actually is for us.  Once upon a time we would be there week in and week out, but that is not the case these days.  For some it is a real routine.  Sunday, they go to church.
We have both been to Bible College and been very involved before.  Churches, like any organization it seems, will chew you up and spit you out if you let them.  For me balance is the key.  I actually wish I knew long ago what I know now.  But, as they say, “youth is wasted on the young.”  I guess knowing stuff is what matters – not so much when you know it.  Too much of anything is not good for a person. I really admire people who work for themselves who get it right.
I remember Wayne Bennett ringing Ricky Stuart to tell him he needed to have a balance.  It was obvious Ricky did not.  Day in and day out was football.  He showed signs of obsession which did not appear to do anyone any good.  He seems calmer these days.
Merril and I needed to find a church that was “home.”  Personally it does not matter to me what denomination a person attends.  As long as the place is “home” for them.
There are Christians and non-Christians in all denominations.  I remember a Pastor in Townsville saying something he acknowledged was controversial and it was, but I so agree with him.  He said he believed there were “Christians” even behind the bars of cults.  C.S. Lewis highlighted that for me in the last book of the Narnia series.  There was a leader in the enemies’ army that as soon as he saw the truth responded positively to it.
“Catholic” or “Protestant” was a big deal a generation ago.  It is becoming less of a deal these days. We all take different roads but it seems it is how it ends that matters.  It is no wonder there is a saying that the end of something is better than the beginning.
It was weird, but Merril and I went to one place that felt like home, and then so did a different place.  It turns out the first amalgamated with the second.
We attended occasionally.  Now it is every second week.  Soon it will be weekly.  It seems to me rushing into a commitment is dangerous and silly.  Merril has offered to help out in the office.  I have offered to help out with the web page.  Both offers have been accepted and we are comfortable with it.
Attendance for us is more than a routine – it is a commitment we are both happy with.
