Chimera

​Chimera
A news report I read today got me thinking.
A team of scientists working in China has created a living organism that is a mixture of human and monkey. Some people have called it Project Chimera.  This is like science fiction stuff, but it is happening.
The article said, “We will have to consider how it develops and what benefits it can bring to humanity.”
I am not one to hold to something “just because.”  It is not just the “what” of something that is important to me but the “why.”  It matters to me that I do not say something just because I have been told it, but because I have discovered something for myself.   A lot of stuff has stood the test of time and some stuff I have changed my conclusions on because of a challenge.
For this one, from my reading of the report, it appears to be built on a suspect foundation.  To me it does not matter how tall a building is, or how impressive it looks, if the foundation is suspect it will topple.  Wrong is never right no matter how pretty it is made to look.
I am all for scientific break throughs in medicine but not at any cost.  I cannot help thinking this is playing with fire.
I can think of several occasions where something was seen to be potentially good for humanity that got away from us.  There is a belief that covid “escaped” from a laboratory.  Organic farmers are concerned about winds blowing from a neighbouring property that sprays.
Apart from the foundation being suspect, I do not trust humankind.    I am expected now to “live with” covid.
I agree with what one scientist working on the project said.  "History shows us that over time our moral standards mutate, like our DNA."  From the evidence I see on the news and in the papers, our moral standards are mutating - degenerating rather than improving.
I just do not think it is worth pursuing this inquiry and having it “escape,” and us needing to live with what could be horrific consequences when the foundation of the research was suspect in the first place.
