Change
They reckon change is inevitable except from a vending machine.
I grew up in a time when the music I played was not what my parents generation played.  To them, theirs was better.  Now younger ones are coming through and I think what I had was better.  Once upon a time the Encyclopedia Britannica was sold and good for a few years.  Now a portion of it is out of date by the time it is home.  These days it is a computer subscription service that keeps me up to date but it is never really mine.
That is one of my pet grips.  We used to love getting the disc as it denoted ownership.  Now discs are mostly unavailable.  Music can be put on five devices.  Even when I digitally buy it, I never really feel it is mine.
A number did the wrong thing though.  They basically stole the music.  A trip to Trash and Treasure shows how many discs are now available and I cannot help wonder if the music has been now been transferred to the computer.  I have always held to the view that someone who composes something deserves the rights to that item, and should be paid for it.
But what I think does not really count.  I cannot hold back the tide.  It would be presumptuous of me even to try.  A lot of change is good, and I think “way to go.”  But I do not believe all change is good.
I do remember when EFTPOS was first being used.  Once upon a time if the system was down, there was a manual process.  Now if it is down, I cannot use it until the system is up again.  I am sure that is better for some, but not for me the consumer.
We try not to use chemicals in our yard.  To me sterile is not better.  It may look neat, but it is lifeless.
But I do try to embrace chance.  Many things are a better way of doing things and everyone benefits.  There is a change coming where no one will benefit.  It will be a no return change.  I draw the line with that one.
At one stage I did wage a personal war against change but gave up.  I came to the conclusion that what was the point?  I am big on balance.  As far as I am concerned all things in moderation.  Four Corners did a very interesting show about the dangers of gaming.  To my mind no doubt there are dangers.  To me there are dangers in everything that is done without moderation.
These days if I fail to embrace something it is often due to ignorance rather than conscientious objection. A lot is physical enhancements.  There are moral things though that I will not embrace.  Many of the “current ideas” are ignorance at best and outright rebellion at worst.  I do not want to go there.
Yet I feel that for many things a failure to attempt to embrace them will see me trampled in the rush.  Living in the past is only possible in a bubble.  It is not where I want to be.
