Change in an Instant

Change in an Instant
What a difference a day makes.  It is true but in some ways that is slow.  I reckon what a difference a moment can make.  In an instant everything changes.  I am thinking that is why I remember where I was when significant events happened.
I remember where I was when I first heard about 9/11.  It was the railway platform.  A girl I would often speak to said, “did you hear about the towers?”    I had not.  I had been blissfully sleeping at the time.  The next morning I was not though.  As soon as I got into town, I wanted to read all about it.  I was subscribing to Time magazine at the time.  I saw one with heaps of pictures.  I thought “I won’t buy it as I will get a copy sent to me.”  Little did I know that was a special edition and was not sent to subscribers.  Through that event everything had changed.
I must admit until that time I thought things were pretty good.  Communism was crumbling, democracy was on the march, there had been no world war, and no crisis had been overwhelming.
Then 9/11 happened.  A new war had started with an enemy who did not measure winning and losing in election cycles.  They were ok biding their time, feeling eventually they would win.
I remember where I was when I first felt Covid may be serious.  I was in my seat watching the Prime Minister give a news conference.  They were committing unheard of billions to the fight.  In an instant, everything had changed.
I remember where I was when Merril and I committed to our current church.  We were looking for one close by.  There were two that felt like home.  That is what mattered to me.  The sign over the door was less important to me than knowing I was home.  We decided to visit one one morning and got all dressed up, but when we got there it was no longer there!  So we went home again.  Turns out it had amalgamated with the other that felt like home.  What was even more remarkable that I found out later is they were two different denominations.
I am a great believer in knowing what I am getting myself into.  I remember walking through the park on my way to see the pastor.  I remember a talk with the pastor.  I remember us committing to that joint.  In that moment everything changed.
There have been heaps of times in my life where everything changed in an instant.  Some good.  Some not so good.  Getting married changed my world in an instant as did getting this home.  When dealing with my tumour I went under one way and came out another.  Stuy passing instantly changed what I had planned for that day and beyond.
I actually do not mind change.  It sure keeps things interesting.  Though some change I really would prefer to do without.  But as they say it is inevitable.
What is not inevitable is my response to it.  Some I need to resist and some I need to go with.  Some I can control.  Some I have no control over.  What ever the case I always have a choice.  Bitter or better.  I is the difference.  Things can change in an instant.
