Carpet Bashing

This is blog 1300.  If you are looking for something deep and meaningful this is not the place.
It was Merril’s turn to pick a word at random from the Dictionary.  She approached her task with a diligence and application that was second to none.  She had me hand her the book while her eyes were closed so she would not know if it was the front or the back she may go to.
The word her finger fell on was “Basher.”  At first all sorts of undesirable things came to mind, but in reading on the definition referred specifically to a carpet basher.  Someone who would ensure there were no foreign substances in a carpet.  Been there done that.
I remember well times of hanging a carpet over the clothesline and giving it a bash.  I remember well the clouds of dust.  Fairdinkum I had no idea it was there (I am sure there is a lesson there somewhere).  But at the time the lesson was, the carpet needs a clean.
We have no carpet in our place.  The cool is what we are after.  Though writing this and it being 7 degrees makes carpets seem more attractive.  But it is more hot than cold here.  Summers coming!
I have never been really keen on carpets. They stain.  If I do not get to the cause quickly the stain is obvious for the rest of the life of the carpet.  Reminds me of where I used to work.  I had to push a trolley and I ran into something one time.  I took a piece out of the structure.  From then on when I went by and saw it I would think “I did that”.   The area was later redesigned, and my contribution was a thing of the past.
Though carpet squares these days impress me.  The design and the way they are laid give no indication they are carpet squares.  Spill something and it is just a case of removing the square or squares where the spill is, and replacing them.  I like that.  I just hope it is not like tiles.  I had to replace some where I was living and could not get the colour I was after.  I could get close, but it was not a perfect match.  Fortunately for me most people did not look that closely.  But I knew.  It is amazing how with something like that it becomes all a person sees.  I have found that not drawing attention to it and there is good chance it will not be seen.
We do have some strategically placed rugs.  They provide warmth but there is one there to cover inadequacies.  I did not have enough of another floor covering to finish the job (we had too much because more than what we needed had been supplied).  So I put down the remaining off cuts I had and put a rug over the top.  Walah!  You would never know.  But I know.
There is no bashing of rugs these days.  We vacuum them.  Once I worked out which end of the vacuum I am supposed to hold, I have done it (Merril knows more about what is best than I do, so we have a Dyson that charges on the wall and is cordless when using.  One fella I heard said a Dyson changed his life.  I would not go that far but it is pretty handy.
Carpet bashing for me is a thing of the past, but it sure brings back memories and sends my thoughts in unexpected directions.
