Capital

It was my turn to choose a word from the dictionary.  I did the usual so I had no idea which end of the dictionary I was at and picked the word “capital.”
I had never thought of it before, but it reinforces what someone said to me in that English is a hard language to learn.  The problem is we have so many words that are spelt the same but mean different things.
The word capital is a prime example for me.  It can be both a noun and adjective.  When I think of capital, I normally think of a city that is the seat of government in a state – like Brisbane in Queensland or Sydney in NSW.  I do not normally think of capital punishment or a capital at the beginning of a sentence.  Yet alone it relation to having enough money (usually) for a project or having a capital idea.  Yet the word capital is correct in all those contexts.
I suppose that all makes sense when I know where the word comes from.  It is from the latin “capitalis” meaning “of a head.”  When I look at the word capital in that context, all the above usages make sense.  Even a capital idea can be seen as the head or best idea.
The word capital these days is used more than in a monetary sense.  When people build up enough credit for what is being sought by some, they are said to have capital with those people.  Like when hospitals are built, or food is provided for some.  Whatever the organization is that does it, has capital with those people.
I personally see that as really important.  A person is less likely to accept an idea on an empty stomach.  An empty stomach is a distraction.  It seems to me that acceptance of an idea of the mind or spirit, is more likely when physical needs have been met.  If I need money for the rent, finding a solution to that problem is likely to preoccupy me.
Being from the country I have empathy for the way country people see the capital (as in state seat of Government).  When in North Queensland we saw the capital as getting all the money.  Our highways needed fixing, but it was like we were out of sight out of mind.  It was no wonder to me north Queensland wanted to become a separate state.
Though there are many correct uses of the word capital, having capital with people is the most important.  For me it is a creditability thing.  Words are cheap.  Actions mean more to me.  I will listen to someone who meets my needs.  They have capital with me.
