Can't

I have been giving some thought today to difference between can’t and won’t. I do though always examine myself first. I think it would be totally unreasonable of me to demand something of others and not apply it to myself. In this instant I think my motivation is ok as much as I can know it.
Can’t or can not to me implies an inability. It does not address a willingness or otherwise, just the fact that, no matter the motivation, it just cannot be done. For example, a wheel-chair bound person just cannot go up stairs even if they want to. The next level is not an option. Choice is not a part of the equation.
Won’t on the other hand implies I can, but choose not to. An example is “I won’t see that person today.” I choose not to. I have the ability to, but for whatever reason I choose not to.
I need to be very careful I do not say I can’t based only on “I think I can’t.” There may be a challenge before me that is to me a bridge too far. The thing to me is my can’t might be a can’t right now but give me the time and the tools and I can. Refusing to accept the challenge can be a won’t not a can’t.
Another thing I need to look out for is that if I genuinely can’t do something I do not try to force myself. Wishing alone that a can’t is a can is fraught. Often “I can’t” with the right help becomes “I can.”
That is a key to me. Asking for and receiving help is to me why we need each other. Some things I can’t do. That does not mean nobody can. A bird is best at flying. It can swim and it can walk but it’s chief attribute is the ability to fly. A fish swims. It can fly out of the water and flying fish spend some time doing it, but it is best at swimming. A wheel-chair bound person may not be able to do certain things, but there will be other things they are really good at. Sometimes they just need assistance to make it happen.
I am sorry I use a wheel-chair bound person as my example of can’t, but it is the most real to me right now. There are no doubt many others that are legitimate. A wheel-chair bound person can’t para glide or climb a mountain but with the help of another they can (and do).
What I do have trouble coming to terms with is someone who can but chooses not to when it is theirs to do. Others can miss out big time. I will do all I can to accommodate someone who can’t. I must admit though I will make it as uncomfortable as I can for someone who can but won’t.
I would expect the same.
