Call Home

Merril and I were looking at something this morning and a few words really stood out to me.  Those words were “call home.”
I guess I could relate big time to that, as when I was working at the university, many students would call home daily.  The ones I knew were from overseas and they would skype their parents.
TV’s are so large now it is like others are sitting in the same room.  I remember seeing the IT Guys sucking on a drink and with popcorn, watching a movie.  When the light was turned on, they had been in front of a huge tv and sitting really close to the screen at home.  We have a mate that skypes home most evenings.  He talks to his mum in England.  No wonder I think we live in such a good age.
This is the home of Merril and me, but we are still both incredibly attached to our families.  We see Merrils sisters and dad fairly regularly and her bro less often but mostly a couple of times a year.  We am attached to, and care about my brothers.  I see one a few times a week and mostly talk on the phone to the other each week.
It seems true to me when they say home is where the heart is.  In thinking about it I think I can confidently say my heart is more with people than things.  Certainly, I can miss things when they are gone (my favourite pair of jeans comes to mind) but I always miss people more.  I take out insurance on some things, but I cannot take out insurance  on someone else.
My home is here, but my home is also in a few other places.  I call home regularly in talking with and visiting my brothers.  I guess the way I know them is different to the way others know them.  Others may know some of their attributes, but families seem to know each other warts and all.
The good thing for me is I am loved anyway.  I no doubt have characteristics that are incredibly annoying, but I know that the moment I am in trouble, family rush to my aid.  Our relationship is not a lip service thing.  The absence of contact can make it more so, but the closer I am to someone the less of a lip service thing it is.
Distance to me is not just a physical thing.  I can be close by someone and still distant, or I can be kilometres from someone and still close.  A friend of mine said no matter where her daughter was, a part of her heart was still with her.  I reckon my heart can still be with someone no matter where they are.  As I say I have a brother that I talk to more on the phone than see.  He is distant but close.
To me calling home can be calling family or friends. Relationships matter to me.  When the line is down, I will try to find a way of making sure all is as it should be.  One friend I call every day but no matter who it is, if I have a relationship with them, I try to call home regularly.
