Busy in Retirement

25/4/2018

I have heard people who have retired say “I don’t know how I had time to work.”  I can very much understand this now.  I seem to have a million projects on the go.  Ok so a million is an exaggeration, but let’s say many projects.
This is what I can think of at the moment:
We have just purchased a spa that has replaced our pool.  We got it because the pool was not heated and so was used minimally.  Getting it necessitated clearing a spot for it.  This meant emptying and moving cupboards, and moving equipment, tables and carpets.  Once we had delivery, we had to put everything back.  There are things I know now, that I did not know at the beginning of the process.  For example a spa needs a fence – even one housed in our shed!  It is on our “to do” list.
The greenhouse is now a proper greenhouse.  It used to house both plants and garden equipment.  All the garden equipment has been moved out.
Getting the spa meant we no longer needed the pool.  It had to be emptied, dismantled and packed.
All the garden equipment was moved into the pool area.
Actually doing this sort of thing is really healthy, as one suddenly sees what one has - including things forgotten about that are useful.
I am housing and classifying all our dvd’s.  I am up to book five and each book contains about 200 dvd’s.  I am also indexing them all, so we can go straight to the one we want, rather than doing a big search.  This is on an excel spreadsheet.  Once I had worked out what columns were needed, my bro put them all on the sheet.  I am now going through what he has done and checking it and changing it where necessary.  I am up to book two.
Someone gave me a stamp collection they had inherited.  This person was a serious collector.  Some stamps were classified, costed and had notes about them.  I did not know until this point that some stamps are set apart by their watermark.  It means looking way closer than I am used to.  It was in a suitcase in a shed, and unfortunately had suffered some water damage.  Someone else had given me their dad’s collection.  I had also been collecting myself.  Fair dinkum there are 1000nds of stamps, and that is not an exaggeration.  I have spent days soaking stamps.  I have started sorting them.  I purchase 400 sleeves to house them in (280 with 7 rows, 40 with 6 rows and 60 with 8 rows).  Most stamps identify the country they are from.  Some don’t, and they can be a real problem.  Also many countries no longer exist.  For example Czechoslovakia is now the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Germany was divided into east and west and is now just Germany again.  Also there are many countries that were part of empires that are now independent republics.  Also some countries have changed their name (Rhodesia is now Zimbabwe, Burma is now Myanmar, and there are others)   They reckon if you have three of anything that constitutes a collection.  I am content with three different stamps of anything.  Series can contain many more than three, and often the most expensive stamp is hard to come by.
I have volunteered for something I have done nothing about yet.  It will be a huge learning curve and involves a website.
Oh, and I now have a nap during the day.  I never used to, but have found I am really good at it.
So along with everything else we are involved in and with, we are kept busy. My condition, and dare I say it, age, means I am slower than I used to be.  It takes longer, but I get there in the end.  One day I will be gone and all this will be for someone else to deal with.  In the meantime, I am kept active and interested.
