Burn Out - Symptoms

30/8/2019

These are tell-tale signs of burn out.  Yet I have experienced many of them without being burnt out.  I think many of these are global.  For example, I am often unmotivated, but it seems to me the lack of motivation here refers to everything I put my hand to.
I know what it is like to experience frustration or other negative emotions.  For example when I have not done something Merril asked me to do.  I am trying to work out if dread or foreboding best describes it.  Probably both.  Just doing it tends to alleviate that thankfully.
It is not good enough I know, but I have forgotten where this list came from.  All I can say is I have experienced it and believe it, or else it would not appear.
1. Exhaustion - Exhaustion can be emotional, mental or physical. Not having any energy, of being completely spent.  I need energy to give.
2. Lack of Motivation - When you don’t feel enthusiastic about anything anymore.  Lack of interest or enthusiasm.  There tends to be no good days and it goes on for a long period of time.  You just don’t care anymore and as a result do not do things well.  Even the thrill of success does not satisfy.
3. Frustration, Cynicism and Other Negative Emotions - Disillusioned, pessimistic, anger, dread. While everybody experiences some negative emotions from time to time, it’s important to know when these are becoming unusual for you.
4. Cognitive Problems - Interference with your ability to concentrate. Focus on the negative. In the short term, this helps "but our bodies and brains are designed to handle this in short bursts and then return to normal functioning. "
5. Slipping Job Performance - Compare your job performance now to previous years. Burnout tends to happen over an extended period and effects my productivity.  I call in sick often, stop returning calls and emails, or regularly come in late and feel I can’t crawl out from under the pile.  Long term reveals if condition temporary or burnout.
6. Interpersonal Problems - (a) more conflicts or (b) withdrawl.  Avoiding interaction.  Immobilizing.  Feel useless.  Can destroy relationships and career.  No job is worth compromising your personal relationships.
7. Not Taking Care of Yourself - Unhealthy coping strategies - drinking too much, smoking, too sedentary, eating too much junk food, not eating enough or not getting enough sleep, self-medication.
8. Being Preoccupied With Work - You need time to yourself after the actual task stops.  Work/life balance is non-existent.  Sometimes, the paycheque doesn’t justify the headaches.
9. Decreased Satisfaction - Less happy with career, home life, in the community, or with social activities.
10. Health Problems - Like digestive issues, heart disease, depression and obesity.  The immune system is weakened, leaving me more vulnerable.
Probably all of us experience elements this from time to time.  That to me though does not mean I am burnt out.  To me burn out is when these things are the way I am all the time.  What ever has caused it I think it is safe to say “Houston, we have a problem.”
