Bulk

Interesting.  Well it was to me anyway.
It is dictionary day, and my finger fell on the word “bulk.”  The dictionary I use (The Australian Concise Oxford Dictionary) had three references to bulk.  Cargo, importance, and a lot.  Looking online the Free Dictionary put it more concisely in summary. “Bulk can mean size, mass, volume, or the main part of something.  It can also refer to unpackaged goods, cargo.”
When I saw the word, my mind went straight to when I used to work at the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.  I worked with a guy that like me wanted to put on weight.  We had a tin there simply called “bulk”.  Its aim was to assist someone to gain weight.  We probably were not using it long enough, but it didn’t work.
I have always been a skinny fella who took consolation in the words “you can’t fatten thoroughbreds.”  Though I must admit I have put on a little weight in my older age.  Mostly in the middle.  Ok for sure I would like it gone but again I console myself with the words “you can tell a man is on the level, if his bubble is in the middle.”  That’s me.
Bulk plays a bigger roll the older I get.
We are downsizing at the moment and wanting to rid ourselves of all we can that requires more than one to lift.  I used to keep tropical fish.  I was always into types rather than different varieties.  My first type was “barbs.”  Then I went on to African cichlids.  I had bulky tanks.  My biggest was 6 x 2 foot.  The heaviest was a 5 x 3 one.  I will never forget the guy who bought it.  He rang offering me a ridiculously low price.  I was totally unwilling to part with it at that price.  He later offered closer to what I was asking, and I sold it to him.  Ho was a big boy.  He carried the tank by himself.   I thought that was totally unnecessary even at the time.  I could have never done it.
The thing is these days I have inventive ways of moving stuff.  The other day I sidled a pot plant that was too big and heavy.  Before that I rolled a cupboard end on end.  Where there is a will there is often a way.  But there is less and less bulky stuff around the house.  I am also thinking it would help if furniture was on wheels.
Speaking of bulk, tomorrow is the day we have a huge tree removed.  We love it, but it is just too bulky and could cause a lot of damage to property or life, if it came down unplanned.
