Buck

Dictionary day today and my fingers fell on the word “buck.” I had no idea there were so many uses of the word buck.  I did see a cartoon of a chicken ordering KFC (go figure) and being told by the attendant that would be 10 bucks.  The chicken went, “buck, buck, buck, buck, buck, buck, buck, buck, buck, buck.”  True story.  Only the facts have been changed.
I use the Australian Concise Oxford dictionary and it had uses of the word buck listed.  A number I had never heard of and have fallen out of use.
But others are in use today.  Like a “buck” being a make deer.  It does not need to be a deer. For any horned animal the male is known as a buck.  Usually though the term is associated with deer. If you had 50 female pigs on one side and 50 male deer on the other what do you have? 100 sows and bucks.  I’d say sorry but I would not mean it.
Or “buck” can be something that horses do usually to get something off their back.  When I think of this, I normally imagine a bucking bronco at a rodeo.
Or someone can “buck” the system.  This is mostly bucking the system within the framework of the system.  Some attract resistance and are seen as enemies of the state. (many times it seems this is an attempt to force someone’s will on others).  Other bucking the system are good ideas embraced by an increasing portion of the population.
Or a person can have a “buck” or dollar to spend.  This is a fairly common term though having a buck these days gets a person a lot less than it once did.  Usually someone needs like 500 thousand bucks or the like for a house and a lesser amount for many things.  I remember resisting paying over a buck a litre for petrol as I thought that was exorbitant.  Little did I realize there would be a day I thought $1.70 a litre would be cheap.
Or someone can “pass the buck”, meaning rather than accepting responsibility (rightly or wrongly) they indicate responsibility belongs somewhere other than themselves.  Passing the buck happens regularly.  Taking ownership of something is not popular when things go wrong.  It is very popular when things are going well.  Basking in the glory.
I would not be surprised to hear any of these uses of buck used in a sentence.  Buck is not a word I go around thinking about, but having done so I was very surprised at the number of uses it had.
