Breech

I think the words themselves prove I get words at random from the dictionary. I mean today’s word from the dictionary is “breech.” I would not have thought of it. I sort of feel like a very interested spectator. What will the word be? I thought I was on the right of the page, but the dictionary was upside down and breech was on the left-hand side.

It did not come to mind, but the first meaning of the word had to do with breeches a person wears. I remember that now, but another meaning given is the one I thought of when I saw the word breech.

It was not to do with an agreement broken, or a breech birth. It was the next one I was thinking of. “a gap in a wall, barrier, or defence, especially one made by an attacking army.”

I immediately thought of Lord of the Rings” when the attacking army breeched the defences of the castle through the barred water course. That was the most vulnerable defence point and that was the one that was the weakest point.

The Dutch kid plugging the hole in the dyke with his hand was an example of someone shoring up a breech.

It makes total sense to me that the weakest point of a defence be attacked. I know it is what I would do. It really applies both personally and nationally.

To gain a foothold an enemy will attack the weakest point. The object is to establish a beach head. Somewhere from which further attacks can be carried out. It seems to me an enemy that gains a foothold gets progressively more difficult to overcome.

It appears to me to do what needs to be done to shore up weak points. Generally that requires time, effort, and finance. But there is no doubt that is always time well spent. It does not matter how strong or well resourced someone or something is, it is true they are only as strong as their weakest point.

So the bottom line is working on weaknesses. For me right now it is not concentrating on them, but crowding them out by making the good stuff bigger. It seems for both countries and people it is the object that matters rather than how it is done.
