Blind Spot

I wish I did not have it, but I do.  There is consolation that everyone else does too.  Blind spots.  Of course, that is true for everyone but me.  I would believe that, because I am by nature blind to a blind spot.  That is the way everyone is.  For me to think a son or daughter, brother or sister or mum or dad can do no wrong, is a blind spot.  They can and they do, but on the whole, I remain blissfully ignorant of what I cannot see.
This may sound incredibly unbelievable but there are times I am wrong.  I never like to admit it. It is not something I really take pleasure in.  I do not remember ever saying “you made my day by pointing out I was wrong.”  Mostly it is a silent acknowledgement and moving on to something else as quickly as I can.
It sort of reminds me of building a skyscraper.  Having something pointed out as wrong is better early.  Before I have finished 50 floors.  I generally do not like having something pointed out, but I do not want to build anything on something that is not right.  Having it pointed out early, saves a lot of time and angst, and can save others heartache.
This morning the doctor referring to a medical issue said, “I am right.”  I said, “you sound confident.”  He said, “It is not confidence, I just know.”  I do think in this instance he is right.  For him not to be right, I would need to not follow instructions or be the exception to the rule.  Some things I just know (through whatever means).  There is much though that I may just think I know.
The thing is, I may spruke something as though it is a given, but I may be talking from my blind spot.  The thing I find really hard to deal with is often others see my blind spot clearly even if I cannot.  Humble pie is not real tasty.
Prejudices can be a blind spot for me.  I saw a classic example of this a few years back.  One person was catholic while another was protestant.  One chose Holdens, the other Fords.  One was a dyed in wool liberal and the other was labour.  Although they had much in common in some things, they could not have been more diametrically opposed.
For me as the observer there were good and bad points to each view.  The adherent to the view though could not be told.  In their eyes there could be no wrong in their views.  To me it was a blind spot.
I heard someone recently say something to the tune of “these are my views.  Please don’t be offended.  I could be wrong.”  I like that a lot.  I read something by a judge with the name of (believe it or not) Learned Hand.  He said ““The spirit of liberty is the spirit that is not too sure it is right”
I may think I am, but that does not mean I am.  If I am wrong, then embarrassment is a small price to pay.  As I am fond of saying “some things matter but many don’t.”  Besides this is all hypothetical as I am never wrong.
