Being Real

Click here to edI really have no idea what I have said and what I haven’t.
I met someone the other day who said his goal was to walk around Australia.  He did not mean leaving here and setting off.  He had found out walking Australia represents 15 thousand kilometres.  Last year he said he had done 4,000 and had stepped it up this year.
My goal is to write something for every day of the year.  The goal will change when I meet it.  I try to keep things to around 500 words.  Sometimes I fail.  I just get carried away.  There is never anything under 400 words though.  I just find writing stuff is a really good way to express what I am thinking, and to take it further.
I did think of using age as an excuse for repeating myself.  Then I thought that life is not all new.  Some things repeat.  There are things I repeat because they repeat.
A few items I have not posted.  At the last count it was 19.  I do not know what I have not posted, so although I know I may have thought about and written something, I do not know if it was posted or not.
Over the course of my life there have been things that just stuck.  I heard a group I like sing about “the law of inversion” and that phrase just stuck.  To me that phrase means something being the opposite of what it appears to be.  Someone may appear to be weak but they really are strong.
The reason I have gone down this track is I have been thinking about people.  Some folk seem really strong.  They look like they have it all together.  They are held up as someone to be like.  Everything about them seems desirable.  If they make a mistake, it looks like they never do.
I just don’t know that I want to be like that.  Certainly I do not want to stand out for all the wrong reasons.  I respect and acknowledge there are those in leadership authority who must always keep a stiff upper lip and have the buck stop with them.  I find few things worse than an unreliable leader.
I must admit though, I gravitate to the individual willing to acknowledge they are like me, flawed. It does not mean of course that I want to be making mistakes, or not be good at anything, but I want to be real.    I think they say “getting to know them, warts and all.”  It is probably why another phrase in a song has stuck with me “I’m not one who’s got it all in place, telling you what you should do.  I’m just one old hungry beggar showing you where I found food.”
I will always aim to do things well.  I will never pretend though, that I know all there is to know, and that things always go according to plan.  They don’t.  I am not Joe Iron Man, I am Joe Average. I can relate to other Joe Averages.  I cannot relate to Joe Iron Man.  I don’t think I would ever aspire to be Joe Iron Man.  Maybe Joe Growing or Joe I’m Not There Yet or Joe Work In Progress.  I feel I can work with others who acknowledge their imperfections.  I reckon we can together achieve something gob smacking to anyone.
Those unwilling to acknowledge their humanity though, I find difficult to work with.it.
