Being Myself

Maybe I am just easily pleased, but I find it fascinating that someone may talk for an hour or more and I need to pick something that may have impacted, while others talk for a very short time and so much is said.  I happened to find that was the case when the Australian Women’s soccer coach spoke.
I have written about his wanting players not just to be a day older but a day better.  I have also written about his thoughts on why Australia were so had to beat when on paper there was no contest.
The last thing that really impacted me was his treatment of those in contention for a role on the team.  Time and again the players indicated they were free to be themselves.  Their attitude and potential were seen to matter more than their current station.  More than that players were not judged by their mistakes but by their ability and aspirations.
To me that is so important.  I am fond of saying “the way someone is, is not necessarily the way they will always be.”  I need look no further than myself to know that is true.  I blow it.  I fall short of goals.  But what I do know is going for me is the goal remains despite my short comings.
Lately I have seen this sort of thing in a new light.  It was actually someone’s thoughts on habits that was liberating for me.  They were talking about forming new habits.  They said falling short once was a fact of life.  Yet to do the same thing again the next day was forming a new habit.
This gave me freedom to realize that blowing it occasionally is a fact of life.  But it is not the way I am.  I am heading in a different direction and blowing it is an aberration rather than a permanent position.
So I was wrapped when team members declared they were free to be themselves.  I may have lofty ambitions.  But occasionally I blow it.  That is an aberration rather than who I am.  What I aspire to I will work at.  I may blow it from time to time but I aspire and work towards something more.
