Bedtime Stories

16/12/2022

That was dramatic.  Even if it was only in my head.
I had to go into Brisbane and drive Merril home (long story short.  Her license has expired.  She needs a letter.  First available appointment was next Monday.  Hence, I am driving at the moment).
A friend kindly offered to take me to Brisbane.  But what would I find?  It’s been a while.  Would the zombie hoards attempt to engulf me?    Was Brisbane still inhabited by humans?  Would my traversing land and sea (we went over a river) be in vain?  Or would my daring escape be the stuff of folklore and told as a bedtime story to future children?
All this lay before me.  I just did not know. What I did know is I would need to drive further than I am used to of late.  I had told my mechanic I probably do 10 miles a week in that car.  20 miles would be a big week.  Yet here I was about to drive close to 40 klms one way.  I was to travel in unchartered waters.  That is like a metaphor. I was attempting to avoid water really.  This was going to be unchartered since the last time it was charted.
But mentally I was ready.  I had engaged in positive self-talk.  I had pictured driving and it had been a success.  And I had prayed.  Actually my prayer for safety on the road has changed since the stroke.  Now I pray please keep everyone from me and me from everyone.
I had done all I could.  All that remained was to do it.  I had gotten all I needed ready.  Two hours before pick up I was good to go.  Yet I still had two hours.  I was not going to let doubts and fears creep in in those two hours.
So I sat down.  But what to do while sitting down?  I checked the computer and there was nothing more I needed to do.  No emails from world leaders asking my advice.  But there are never any of those.
I decided to make a coffee.  That took up 3 minutes and 15.0473 seconds.  Time well spent.  I watched the bird antics.  Some things never change.  Except when they do.  A couple of Corella’s visited our food feeder this morning.   That does not happen ever day.  More like every 9th day.
But I was absorbed for 48.3745 seconds.  At this rate it would be no time at all before I needed to leave.  Already over 4 minutes had past, and I had less then 116 minutes to go.
But the time did pass.  I went there and got Merril and brought her home.  Without incident.  All the Brisbane people looked normal.  I did not see one zombie.  It turned out this could be a children’s bedtime story for kids having trouble getting off to sleep.
