I’ve got a bone to pick with the Americans.  When I say Americans, I do not mean those from South or Central America.  Or even the Canadians.  I mean those from the USA.  It is my bone, and I can pick and choose who I pick it with.
I know a few people from other parts of America, but I don’t have any bones to pick with a Brazilian or Argentinian or someone from Chile.  In fact, one of the nicest people I know was the former No. 1 Chilean table tennis player.  He was my coach for a while.  They were good times, but he knew how to work me.  He now lives in Brisbane and has become an Australian citizen.
At QUT there was a lady serving at subway that was from somewhere in South America.  She had a degree in something or other, but it was not recognised in this country.  One of our cleaners was from Central America.  She had a law degree and was high up in the legal profession.  Again, her degree was not recognised here.  She basically left there because she wanted to live.  A new regime took over and she was not seen as the flavour of the month.  Another cleaner saw our IT guy there early one morning and knew exactly what he was working on (red hat).
I’ll admit, I had never heard of Suriname (it is a small country one the right top of south America.)  That changed when they won gold in the Olympics in swimming.  Good for them I reckon.  If they are like Australia, then that win would have given the impression that Suriname was a household name all over the world.
All those people have my admiration.  Though it really is pretty easy to get.  Anyone who is giving it a go gets my admiration.  Those in the US do to.  I know someone over there who has really had to create their own job.  They video record people and sell the product.  Those from the US are some of the most creative people I know.  It is amazing what can be achieved when circumstances demand it.  I will never understand American exceptionalism though.  In my eyes they hold to some weird stuff, just like I imagine we do in their eyes.
They seem they can be very inward looking though.  I asked someone where they thought Australia was.  They said just east of Brazil.  It is east of Brazil going the long way.
The reason I have a bone to pick with them is it seems they always go to the “bathroom.”  I don’t know that anyone needs to go to the “bathroom” as often as they declare they need to go to the “bathroom.”  Except maybe the ladies to look at themselves in the mirror, or put make up on, or ask themselves “does this dress make me look fat?”  Though they could just be washing their hands, and I don’t know that anyone can ever do that too much.
I am all for euphemisms, but I am also all for calling a spade a spade.
