Base Camp

I would like to think it was due to the stroke, but I really think that is only part of it.  The other part is I am just getting old!
These days I seem to be good for half a day physical work.  I can go all day if the physical work is in the arvo but if it is in the morning, I don’t know I am good for much later.
Once a month on a Saturday morning we have a feed and get together.  Someone does the cooking, and I am really pleased about that.  Especially this morning.  There was too much fat in the sausages.  At least three times the top of the BBQ caught fire.  He calmly put it out with a wet towel.  I admired him keeping going until all the sausages were cooked.
We had too many and had a free sausage on bread give away at our local food pantry.  That was well received.  I admit I had another sausage (or two) there as well.
The get together was good.  Time went really quickly.  We had a couple of people that were attending for the first time.  We call it Menzone.  It is a guy thing (sorry ladies) and some guys actually opened up. (that can be rare for guys – as bad as herding cats)
I had all this work planned for after the event.  I got ready and went to the place it was to happen.  That was as far as I got.  Merril met me and said she had to go somewhere unexpectedly.  She got me to take over serving people.  I enjoyed it even though it was not what I had planned to do.  By the time she came back I was over the thought of doing what I had in mind.
Besides I had started really early and just wanted sleep.  There were other things I did that go with the territory but I admit I was looking forward to getting home.  It was not like I had not seen home before but I guess it was what was familiar.
I probably like it as it is the place I sally forth from.  Having recuperated and regrouped (can an individual regroup) I am ready for another round.
While I do enjoy what I do (I doubt I would not be doing it otherwise, being retired and all) it is nice to do it from a base called “home.”
While it is genuinely something I do not take for granted it is something I sure will enjoy while I have it.
