Asking of Others

I am the sort of person who, within my area of expertise, will not ask someone to do something unless I have proved it works for myself.
What can never work I call “show stoppers.”   To me, that is something that stops a thing dead in its tracks, and it will go nowhere.  Show stoppers are out there, but often there are fewer than some claim.  What I have a lot of trouble with, is someone claiming something is show stopper, and they have not thought it through.  I have seen those with the power, stop something for their own reasons, but I think the individual or organization is the lesser for it.  It seems easier to say no then yes.  However, what is beyond my control I try not to worry about.
Often it seems people just don’t want to do something, and make excuses.  Excuses to me, are not a reason for not doing something.  If it can be proved to me something is not going to work, then I will not pursue it.  Otherwise, what matters to me, is that all alternatives are explored.  Often things can be done a different way.
For me, it was what kept my job interesting.  There were paths I had never been down before, that necessitated me learning new skills, and sometimes thinking outside the box.
They reckon experience is a fickle thing.  Sometimes people claim to have 20 years experience.  Unfortunately, it could be just 20 years of doing the same thing.  Another person might have the same timeframe of experience, but have done many things in that time.  To me their “experience” carries more weight.  I think it is the weight that matters, not the number.
Since my stroke, I have had to find alternate ways of achieving my goals.  If I cannot do it then so be it, but it will not be determined by me that it cannot be done, without exploring different possibilities.
I am not advocating that life is confined to what we know.  Clearly that is not the case.  To me it is why knowledge is expanding exponentially.  Just because it has not been done, does not mean it cannot be done.   For me, a better way of doing something is genuine.  Not attempting something is not.
I have a Cert. 3 in Project Management.  No biggy, but it was to me.  I was ready to give up, but was encouraged not to.  I didn’t give up, but it meant study, exploring, reading, note taking and a test at the end.  Being out the other side, I am really glad I stuck with it. Ok, it never became my job, but there were things in it that make me who I am.
I find learning a new task often a burden rather than a joy, but inevitably I am glad to have done it. What do they call it “having another string in your bow.”  It is definitely worthwhile, as it provides a way of doing things that may not be known to those involved.
For me, it is having a go that counts.
