Approval Addiction

It’s weird.  I heard a term the other day I had never heard before and I am surprised I had not.  The term was “approval addiction.”  I thought what I read when I googled it summed it up well.
“Approval addiction is when someone relies on the approval of others for their self-esteem and self-worth. They fear rejection, judgment or disapproval from others to the point that they try to avoid rocking the boat at all costs…here are some signs to look out for:  You Struggle to Form Your Own Opinions; You Have Trouble Saying No; You Go Along to Get Along.
Breaking patterns of approval addiction can be hard.”
I thought the solutions offered were good for some (therapy), but I admit I am skeptical.  The reason for my skepticism is there have never been more books on marriage yet divorce has never been rifer.  There have never been more books on raising kids, but the youth crime problem is greater than it has ever been.
The “having trouble saying no” is something I have had to get over and something I see a bit of.  To me it is natural to want to be liked.  Yet often I find people say yes to the point of drowning.  So often a person wishes they had not agreed.  I personally prefer someone to say no upfront then to say yes then no later.
This seems particularly difficult for someone who wants to help.  It is in their nature.  “Rescuer” is a term I have heard.  As far as I am concerned the world is full of needs.  They are always there.  But just because they are there does not mean I am the one to solve every problem I see.
I can take an interest in it, and assist as I can from the sidelines, but that particular battle is not necessarily one I should fight.  I have other battles to fight, and if I try to fight them all I am overwhelmed and no good to anyone.
In so many ways no one cares for me like I care for me.  My saying yes can be a noose around my neck and render me no good for myself or anyone.
