I was thinking about earning stuff - considering what am I owed?  I thought of “a fair day’s work for a fair days pay.”  To me that is a reasonable expectation.  It is like an agreement has been entered into.  I agree to money for services.  If it is not forthcoming, at best I walk away and at worst I am sent bust.
But there is other stuff I think is not a credit and debit thing. I have heard it said that the best form of giving is to someone who has no way to repay.  So often we invite someone for a meal or the like, all the while knowing it can be reciprocated.  To me that is ok, but whether it is a selfless act depends on other things at play.  If returned the balance ends up neutral.
No, to me the most satisfying form of giving is to someone who is not in a position to reciprocate.  There is no doubt this is a work in progress thing.  But I do know when it is done, I feel good.
It seems to me a lot has to do with motivation.  Do I give to get, or do I give to give without the thought of return?  It’s not a money thing, though it can be. It is any act that knows the recipient is not in a position to do anything about.
It seems to me a true test of motive is a willingness to do something anonymously.
I remember telling no-one what I was doing and going to someone’s place to do their lawn.  The guy I was doing it for was running late and I saw him.  I remember telling him I meant for no one to know of this (it is important that what is done is something the person wants done, and not just my idea of what they need).
I did learn a couple of other things that day.  It got really hot.  Even though I drank plenty of water I just about collapsed.  I learned my limitations, and that sometimes giving is hard work but worth it.  To me the reward is not in the credit I may receive at the time for doing it (but for sure I like it)
I guess my way of thinking has been built on how I feel I have been treated.  There was no way I could pay off what I owed but it was done for me.  I was liberated, and I like that what I do is a taste of that.
