Alone

Just heard words in a song I had not heard before, but I really love.  The artist was new to me and sang, “We are all in this together, we are all in this alone.”
If there is one thing this Covid-19 has shown me it is how much I need people.  There is no doubt “alone time” is good, but I can only take so much of it.  I need the company of others.  Merril says she gets cabin fever.  I think I am more of a home body than Merril, but I know there are times I crave the company of others.
Particularly since I know I am not the font of all human knowledge.  I know, I know, that is hard to believe.  Tom Cruise made famous the line “you complete me” and I laugh, but I know there is a sense where others do complete me.  I can live without others - but I am the lesser for it.  It has never been easier for me to obtain knowledge from the internet, but it will never provide intimacy or the wonder of being understood or of understanding another, warts and all.  There is something about face to face.   That to me is one of the reasons why this Covid thing is so sinister.  It keeps us apart. 
Then again, “we are all in this alone.”  I appreciate being able to express myself and to have others perhaps realize what I am saying.  That is a best-case scenario.  I could get run out of town.  Whatever happens, I have had a hearing, but what comes from within me is me. I cannot in all honesty blame someone else for where I stand.  It is my choice.  I may have had many things that could persuade me to hold to something, but it is my choice.
I am the only one looking out through these eyes.  It is definitely in my interests to be true to myself.  I came into this world alone, and I will leave it alone, so I think it is important I am happy with me, as I need to live with me.
Company is great and to be sought out, but there always comes a time when I wave others good-bye and it is me alone.  I could be having the time of my life, or I could be enduring rather than enjoying something, but whatever it is, it comes to an end.  I alone am left to weigh up the experience.
I guess I am one who sees things in absolutes.  I really like to consider the end of a matter and decide on a way to go.  I have done that.  That is why I think, “we are all in this together, we are all in this alone.”
