Aim

We are on holidays right now. I did not know I needed a holiday, but a couple of things happened before we entered our unit that made me think “time for a holiday.”

Me being me, directed us to a shopping centre car park. It ended up being so far from the shopping centre it was ridiculous. What made it worse was there was no obvious way out. That was not a given though. Eventually we did find the exit. I said I would say nothing at that point, and let Merril go where she wanted. Turned out it was a good idea. We were at a good car park in very little time.

The second thing that happened very soon afterwards, was that I held my left hand under a tap while I pressed the soap dispenser with my right hand. The soap went straight down as my hand was not under the right place. I looked around to make sure no one else saw that. Others being around though means I have my doubts.

Still we are here now. The worst thing is getting our stuff up three flights of steps, as there is no lift. Still that is always a one off and we are in. Going down the steps with stuff is always easier. Besides we always have less stuff when we leave.

This is veg week. We have brought books to read. The one I am reading at the moment seems to dovetail into what seems to be the theme of the moment. I posted something recently about running a race. This book is by a guy called Steve Sonderman who coached basketball and soccer. The book is written so much like a coach speaks.

He referred to an “old adage” which I am sure others have heard but it was new to me, and I liked it. He said some spend their whole life climbing the ladder only to find the ladder was leaning against the wrong wall.

His point was if you are going somewhere you need to know where you are going. That was his philosophy when coaching. We he started coaching soccer which he had never done before he said this is the ball and that is the goals. I don’t care how you get there, but the aim is to get this ball into that net.

Sometimes my aim changes and that is ok as long as it is not a giving up when the going got tough thing. The point for me is that I have something I am aiming for. A guy was thinking of learning the piano. He was thirty years old. He was thinking of learning it for five years but was unsure. He asked someone. They asked, “how old will you be in five years’ time if you learn the piano?” The guy said 35. Then the guy asked, “how old will you be in five years’ time if you don’t learn the piano?” The guy said, "35, How come the same?” Maybe he was not the sharpest tool in the shed.

The thing I take from that is no matter what I do, time passes just the same. I can choose to do what is in my heart to do, or I can drift. Where I need help, I need help. The shame is not in needing help, but in not asking for it when I need it.

In five years, five years would have past, no matter what I do.
