AI
I was watching a program on AI yesterday.  As if things were not tough enough already.  One thing I would not like to be these days is a teacher.  It seems the battle to keep phones out of the classroom was hard enough.  Let alone the troublesome kids which seem to becoming more troublesome as time goes by.
Now there is AI to deal with.  I can just imagine some students saying my assignment is not done and it is due tomorrow and having AI write it for them.  Teachers generally know what certain kids are capable of but someone filling in may not.  Anyway it seems like one more level of complexity to me.
The New York Times said the head of Open AI, Sam Altman was the Oppenheimer (“father of the atom bomb”) of this generation.  It really seemed to sneak up on me but it is evident on my computer and the strikes in the Acting industry in the US.
My problem is one I have mentioned before.  How everything left to itself tends to decay.  It just seems to me that mankind is inclined to destruction.  No matter how many steps forward we take we end up with a giant mess that needs cleaning up.
The show featured a doctor who was interviewed and a career army person.  The doctor was all excited as he is at the forefront of thought AI.  The person shown could walk (after a devastating accident) by being connected to computer chips that responded to thought.  He had left the US for Switzerland to head up a program.
The doctor was incredibly keen about his work but when he was asked about the possible threat of AI despite the good it can do he said he was more concerned than hopeful.
The army man talked of the benefits of having a robot blow up instead of a person but said the potential of AI and warfare said it depended who invented the technology first.  The chief concern was AI accidentally separating from human control and AI making decisions itself to kill humans in response to its “mission.”
It seems a long way from Azimov’s law of robotics which stated a robot may not injure a human being.
Maybe I will or won’t be around long enough to see the fruit of what is being invented in AI but it seems to me mankind’s track record is not good.
