Adversity

ClickFor decades I have been closing my eyes when something I don’t want to see, comes on the tv or at the movies.  Murder scenes these days are pretty graphic.  I am not the one to ask what happened, as my eyes are shut.
I don’t know how long I have been doing that, but I do remember seeing a ghost heading up some stairs when I was a young fella - and I still remember it.  There are definitely some images I prefer not to have in my mind.  I know I am not typical.  Some people get off on such things.  They seem to almost live for them.  The latest Stephen King thriller, or something scary has to be seen.  The majority though are more nonchalant.  They are “take it or leave it” people.  I am definitely a leave it person.
I actually like the way I am.  It would be sad if I didn’t.  If this was something that needed to be changed or overcome then rightly it could be said “Houston, we have a problem.”  I don’t see it as a problem though.  For some, any unknown noise represents something unspeakable.  It may be the wind blowing something shut.  But at night, when it seems the monsters come out, it can be seen as something coming to do harm.
There are some things cause dismay and don’t need to.  I will always try to be ready for the worst, but that does not mean I expect it.  I (like many I imagine) have seen a cartoon where something that is thought to be really big, turns out to be something really small.  It is what seeing bad scenes does to my imagination that I want to avoid.  They mess with my head.
We used to have auditors visit us at work.  Their role was to imagine the worst but believe for the best.  One time it was actually worse than they imagined.  Still it turned out for the best.  I had to present a talk as part of a course on how to overcome a particular problem.  The auditors came many times, and only once was there a problem.  I actually was dreading their arrival as I knew there was a problem.  It was not like it was fraud or theft or anything like that.  It really came about as a result of us having too much on our plate.
But that is a poor excuse.  Difficulties are inevitable.  I never invite them or even welcome them, but I do think they are better for me than a life of ease.  The company who’s spaceship it was in Walle summed it up for me.  They were called Buy N Large.  People on the ship never had to walk anywhere.  There was always transportation.  As a result, they all grew fat and lazy.
They were not prepared.  I will never beat adversity if I have never know adversity.  Sure I won’t have fear because I won’t have common sense.  Sense tells me to avoid deadly snakes or scorpions or things that will do me harm.  Sense not only tells me to avoid them, but how to deal with them if I must.  I don’t always listen to common sense though.  Makes my life interesting.  What will tomorrow be like?  Who knows?  I guess I will need to live it to see.
As is often said in jest “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”  Although I do not invite adversity, I do know it makes me stronger. here to edit.
