Ads

I am a bit of a sucker for ads.  I do not like though that so often I turn on the tv to watch a certain show, and it is on an ad break.  Most ads I do not like, but some I do.  A successful ad to me is one I want to see.
They reckon that to be successful an ad needs to show its brand name within the first five seconds.  I have enough trouble remembering the name of brands in ads I like let alone remembering anything in ads I do not like.
Some though it seems just pursue a policy of showing their ad adem nauseum.  I remember the brand because of the sheer weight of screen time.  Clears Score seem to be doing that at the moment.  Real Life insurance have never stopped.
I have only seen it occasionally, but I really like “Gruen” where they examine and comment on ads.  Many of the people on the show are from advertising agencies and their insight into ads is gold to me.
I guess everyone is reached in different ways. but I love how some companies go for ads with some humour in them.  I also like that it seems to be “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try, again.”  Spec Savers were like that for me.  To me they have a lot of ads I find humorous.  They also have an “Audiology” branch which is not promoted in Australia but checking their site it is a service they offer.  I think they must be successful if I have gone visiting their site and replaying some of their ads.
That was how I saw one of their ads promoting having hearing tested.  A guy was snowbound and ordered supplies.  A crate arrived and when opened a clown sprung out and declared “surprise!”  The implication was get your hearing tested.   Instead of supplies the person heard surprise.
Other ads are successful to us if something they say becomes a byword in our household.  Merril and I just need to say Titanium for one of us to start laughing.  Budget Direct initially featured Captain Risky.  He became a real cult figure.  I loved his antics.  Lately their ads have been movie send ups.  The reason we laugh at Titanium is they sent up Alien and showed a couple wrapped up in a web like substance.  Much to the wife’s unbelief, the husband extolled the fact he had a “titanium” policy with another company.
Compare the Market feature Meerkats in their ads.  They featured a web site where meerkats could meet.  It was a real site they set up.  I know because I went there to check it out.
Merril and I laugh every time at Callum Murray.  What makes it more pertinent for us is we met a lady named Murray whose husbands name was Callum.  I love the long version of that ad.  “Callum Murray to the sea food isle.”  Jack seems better.
To me the most successful ads are the ones I wish they would show more often.  I love the skittles ad with the guy and girl under the stands sharing skittles and him declaring his doctor has told him he has Skittlepox.  He is covered in Skittles and she eats one and asks “is it contagious” and he looks at her and says “I don’t think so” though she has the start of a Skittle covering.
I can do without ads, but if I have to see them, I’d rather like them.
