A Place for Elephants

What a day.  What a couple of days really.  And what a couple of days to go.
I admit it – I like wild.  When someone delivering pamphlets suggested they liked our bush garden I though “yeah.  I can go with that.  Bush garden.”
But I was ashamed.  I have never been ashamed of the front yard before but I was this time.  As Jack Newton used to say when there was a wayward golf shot into the bush, “elephants go in there to die.”
That is the way I felt.  The wild I like had gotten away from me.  I had no idea what could be lurking in the impenetrable jungle.
Fixing it was on the to do list.  Lockdown just meant the future was now.
We haven’t finished it, but I reckon we are more than halfway.  We are working from the front to the back.  The thinking is, deal with what can be seen from the road first.  I have been building, weeding and organizing.  Merril has been weeding and mulching.  Apparently using heaps of mulch reduces the weeds.  We obviously have not used enough yet but this time I am going for overkill.  Weeding is therapeutic.  Too much weeding is a pain.
Merril had to do banking today so on the way she went to Bunnings and bought a Robyn Gordon Grevillia.  Grevillia’s are bird attracting.  I really hope the birds appreciate it.
We have a spot.  We want a feature tree there.  We had one but it was ruthlessly chopped off whipper snippering.  Now the grass has taken over.  Grass does so well where we do not want it.  And blue banded bees have decided to make the soil their home.  We have another home for them.  It is called a bee hotel and is designed for all the solitary bees.  Maybe that can be their new home.  They better like it really because I am over it.  I love them really but they need to fit into my plans not me into theirs.
Our mulcher has come into its own.  Autumn is a good time for cutting back and we are mulching the cuttings to use as ground cover in the garden.  We also planted non spreading bamboo as a screen at the side.  It has worked a treat.  Trouble is it has grown upwards and the top is too hard to reach.  A good thing though is the leaves that have died off are good for mulch.  Merril suggested we use the leaves from our tree (and there are heaps of them on the path of our hidden garden) for mulch too.  I also have a mulch pile which fortunately (judging by the worms) thrives on neglect.
But today we have done our dash.  Darkness is falling.  Tomorrow it all starts again.
